With greater recognition of environmental issues these days, it's nice to see that the outdoor advertising business is doing its part. Most forms of outdoor advertising leave a relatively small imprint on the environment anyway, but there is always room for improvement.
Traditionally, bulletins and posters have used vinyl as the primary material for advertising and at the end of the advertising campaign the vinyl was discarded. Nowadays, most of the vinyl can be re-used for consumer products. More often manufacturers are now using PE Substrates (polyethylene), a lighter weight material that can be recycled. Since 2009 more than 65 percent of 12 x 25 posters in the Phoenix metropolitan area were converted from paper to single sheet poster systems.
Another change made in recent years has been a change in lighting and the bulbs used for those lights. The new lights and bulbs are more efficient and have resulted in less light spillage. Eighty percent of the new lighting shines directly on the boards and diminishes the amount of light pollution previously created by the lighted signs.
More and more boards are also being powered by alternative fuel sources. Wind turbines and solar panels can be found mounted to lighted structures or digital boards, especially in rural areas where access to the power grid is not as easily accessible. With an average of 211 sunny days per year, expect to see an increase in the number of boards in Phoenix utilizing solar panels.
